Anyone else doing battle with these parasites this Summer?
They have become nearly immune to the usual flea bombs on the market, kind of like how insects are becoming immune to Monsanto round-up GMO crops.

I have 2 "indoor" cats, they shouldn't have fleas but they do, because the kids brought them over from the neighbors house who have 2 dogs that never get flea treatments.

My lower legs look like a shark attack. Scars, scabs, fresh bites.... they love my blood for some reason, mosquitoes don't though so I'm good there.

Does anyone here know of any "natural" flea killers/repellents I can try?
After 3-4 rounds of Black Flag flea bombing the house, they still survive!

Appreciate any helpful advice.

Thanks in advance.

We had them really bad one year when I lived in Illinois. Everyone in the entire neighborhood had them, pets or not.

What worked best for me was a product that could be sprinkled on floors, kind of like carpet fresh. (don't remember the name, sorry) It worked really well, even on my hardwood floors.

After like 3 treatments of that, they were gone.

Black Flag stuff never seems to work at all, for any kind of bugs.

We have had a bad year as well.

Vet's + Best
Flea and tick home spray is good. It kills on contact (and you have to make contact) but only lasts 24 hours. You can use this on yourself!

Diatomaceous Earth (food grade) is also good.

I have been using both with Advantix® II but I do not think this is safe for cats.

Good luck!

DE is da bomb! Good for fire ants and just about any pesky insect. Most of it is food grade so it's very safe. Borax is also good and easier to find. Check feed stores for DE, though.

Never heard of the stuff, sounds good though. I will have to try it.
My will is almost broken from these creatures' relentlessness.

I've been using Frontline on the cats, seems to work for a short while.
Even the vet said this year has been a ridiculous fleas season, and they recommend using the Frontline every 3 weeks vs. the 1 month time frame.

I've tried using spray on the cats, but that's not happening.
Cats and a spray bottle..... great combo, they just love being sprayed.

One of my cats is loaded with scabs. He's a rescue, and is declawed on front paws, so he mutilates himself when they bite him. His back claws are like Wolverine's claws, and he bites himself hard.... poor thing.....

No, I take showers.
I stopped taking baths when I stopped playing with GI Joe's in the tub.

Saw maybe one, two ticks in my entire life, Ive see SIX try to get at me this year alone. VERY creeped out ( I'm a man...NOT afraid of bugs... but they have conditioned me that every one of those little bastards has Lyme's disease... I jump around like a little girl near a spider, not fun for my libido).

Well there you go. You have to drown them.

BTW, are you one of those half-humans? I mean, are you still covered in fur? You furry half-humans can avoid flees by shaving yourselves. The flees will think you're a real human and move on to one of the hairy animals. Have you tried any of those flee collars they sell for all you furry animals? chuckle

Everyone in my family has lyme's disease. We got it when we lived in northern Wisconsin.

You can only get it from deer or bear ticks, so unless you live where there are a lot of those, you won't get it.

Have issues with fleas here on my cat. Also resistant to frontline etc.

I have discovered, however, fly killer spray, seems to kill them (?). You'll have to avoid foodstuffs and breathing it as it's toxic but I found a spraying of a room seems to impede their growth/attacks.

Otherwise, you'll have to spend time picking them off and killing the fleas manually. You can't crush them (well, you can, but it's difficult, gross and slow). Most effective means is either some hand cream (stick the flea inside the hand cream so it can't breath and dies), or a bottle with some chemically treated (IE soap, liquid soap) water (drop the flea in). You'll have to exercise serious self-control though - you have to not scratch when you feel an itch coming on, and check to see if a flea is there (pinch inbetween fingers, dump in container). Works best if you purposefully expose your arms and cover everything else (so they leap onto your easily accessible arms).

I've noticed that Frontline is only lasting 2-3 weeks instead of 4. Advantage seemed even less effective this year.

One of the best things you can do for a flea infestation is to vacuum every single day. Make sure the contents get bagged, tied, and dumped in the outside garbage can after each vacuuming.

I'd also suggest sprinkling something onto the carpet and working it in with a stiff broom to get to the flea eggs down in the carpet. Options would be diatomaceous earth, borax, or a commercially prepared pesticide based application. Each choice has it up and down sides, so you'll have to do your own research there and decide which is best for your situation.

In the meantime, vacuum, vacuum, vacuum!

The DE is like baby powder so the cats can be dusted with it then rub it in to get it to the skin.. You might want to wear a mask. It is completely safe but it can burn in your sinuses if you breath in too much. This is usually all we do but this year has been so bad that we have had to add more to the treatment.
