For my older system. Core 2 duo 2.0GHZ, 4GB memory, old PCI express 1.x video card slot. My 7900 gs just isn't cutting it anymore.

I was thinking the GTX 460, but it's power usage is insane. What would you recommend?

gtx 460's power usage isn't that bad.. I have a 470 overclocked to the brink @ 1.2v.. now THAT is insane power usage (can pull 400w) but default @ .925 or so isn't that bad at all. Maybe 220w.

The 5xx series is much better on power use. 6xx is even better. But 4xx is the best bang for the buck.

Weak PS with no surge protection (cheap ones) could bust vid card and cpu

your 2.0 duo is limited... 128bits ddr5 are still powerfull cards

when gaming and I need speed, I lower my graphics to keep up with faster cards. all the way to 800/600

Any midrange video card you get (gtx 460, 560, 660 and up) will be cpu limited. I would get a decent cpu cooler and overclock that core 2 duo and get a gtx 550ti and call it a day. When you do get a more powerful MB and CPU you can put that video card in it and play almost anything with the eye candy turned up pretty far.

If you turn down the Anti-Aliasing and resolution is it still too slow? Direct X support a problem?

You can use a PCIe 2.0 card in a 1.0 slot but there are of course performance penalties.

Ask how much you want to spend. Look for either an Nvidia or ATI card in that price range with the highest first number on the model number you can afford. Be sure that you can return it. Some cards just won't work on older motherboards.

For a little more than a hundred bucks look at the GeForce GTX 650. The chip on the 600 series is a different from the five before it. If you will spend the money for something nicer this would be the minimum. The 500 and under series are still good, but ATI is a better value.

For the minimum DX 11 and lowest price look at the ATI 5450 or higher.
