Chile quake moved entire city 3 metres to west: study
THE massive earthquake which struck the west coast of Chile last month moved the entire city of Concepcion more than three metres to the west.
Preliminary measurements drawn from global positioning stations showed that Concepcion, Chile's second largest city, is now 3.04 meters further west than it was prior to the 8.8-magnitude quake which struck February 27.
It was the fifth most powerful quake recorded since instruments have been available to measure seismic shifts and there have been hundreds of aftershocks, several exceeding magnitude 6.0.
The Chilean capital of Santiago also shifted 27.7 centimetres to the west, according to measurements gathered by a team of Chilean and US scientists and released by Ohio State University.
On South America's east coast, Argentina's capital Buenos Aires moved nearly four centimetres to the west and significant displacements were recorded as far away as the Falkland Islands.

That's got to be affecting the mid-Atlantic ridge a bit too.

could it be that the GPS is out of alignment due to the Earthquake in Chile which led to a reduction in the length of Earth days and the Earth's axis shifted by 8 inches?

I would imagine it would impact GPS...

8 cm not inches. big diff.
"Seismologists estimate that the earthquake was so powerful that it may have shortened the length of the day by 1.26 microseconds and moved the Earth's figure axis by 8 cm or 2.7 milliarcseconds."

considering the Mw8.9-9 in 1700 off coast of Oregon/washington lowered the coastline by about 10 feet, I'd not be surprised if the Andes were high or lower by some bit, +/- a meter or so.
I need to be checking on Chaiten again... see if it's up or down in eruptions due to this quake.

my mistake Geogal, U R correct. was typing from memory and guess living in the metric-phobic US, I subconsciously stated inches.
