Foul odor pervades Southern California, prompting 911 calls
Residents in parts of Southern California have been complaining Monday about a distinct sulphur or rotten-egg smell in the air.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said his department has received hundreds of phone calls — including some to 911 — about the odor, which he said has been detected from the Palm Springs area to Simi Valley.

Officials said the department has called the Air Quality Management District.

"They are aware of the odor and are investigating," Humphrey said. "We are not aware of any specific hazard associated" with the odor.

There has been some speculation that the odor is caused by the Salton Sea, where the annual die-off of fish often causes a foul smell. But the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported that officials at the Salton Sea said they don't think the die-off is responsible and that air quality officials are investigating.

The smell was most pronounced in parts of the Inland Empire, which is upwind from the Salton Sea.

September 4 - Foul smell returns to Palm Springs area

A foul yet familiar smell returned to the Coachella Valley as workers returned to their jobs Tuesday after a long weekend.

"in La Quinta, the sewer smell is so bad today its giving me head ache," Twitter user @usarespnsblty wrote Tuesday morning.

The odor was also noticeable in Palm Springs on Tuesday.

Desert Sun reporter Sherry Barkas looked into the smell's possible sources — from dead fish in the Salton Sea to a plant in Thermal — and found the stink hard to pin down.

"Around the time of the 1811-12 New Madrid earthquakes, people in the area where the quakes occurred, noted the smell of sulfur, and especially after thequakes hit, many eyewitness accounts described a stench of sulfur in the air. This was due to the releasing of fumes from the magma chamber, up through cracks, with the pressure pushing it from the eruption sequence."

I'd stay away from La Brea.

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.

Sulfur smell in city Tuesday night
By Martin Weil - TheWashingtonPost

August 17, 2011.

A sulfurous odor was reported Tuesday night in many sections of Washington near the Potomac River, as well as in Arlington, authorities said.

The smell was noted in Foggy Bottom and Georgetown as well as along the Southwest Waterfront, in park areas near the river, and in Anacostia, according to Pete Piringer, spokesman for the D.C. fire and emergency services department. Arlington County’s emergency communications center said reports were also received there.

Piringer said authorities were trying to find the source of the odor. He said they were investigating whether the cleaning or draining of sewage or water supply facilities might have created the smell.

interesting correlation, especially considering the location, since D.C. isn't exactly known for earthquakes. I hope the same thing isn't about to happen in L.A.

The San Francisco Earthquake - 18 April 1906

...according to Edgar Larkin (1906), who collected a great many accounts, the odour of hydrogen sulphide was noted in the area of Sausalito. He also reported that sulfurous odors were pungent in Napa County during the night of the 17th and 18th before the upheaval, and lasted all day. . . . From many of the letters it is clear that the entire region north and east of San Francisco is saturated with gases of sulfur origin. . . .

In Santa Rosa, according to Lawson and others (1908), a strong smell of sulphur had been noticed two days before the earthquake by one Charles Kobes. Since during an earthquake eight years previously, "sulfur fumes came up from under his house which almost drove his family from home", the recurrence of this phenomenon on 16 April 1906 caused Kobes to tell his family that there would be another earthquake.

Growing up in the OC down there I still remember days when it just smelled absolutely terrible outside with no explanation. Like methane... (fertilizer?) It always freaked me out.

I lived surrounded my refineries, depending on what direction the wind is blowing is what city I blame for the smell.

Edmond Woman Says She Can Predict Earthquake Activity

An Edmond woman says she had advanced warning on Wednesday's earthquake that rattled central Oklahoma.

Jennifer Bingham said she noticed a sulfur stench in the creeks and rivers around Edmond in the last few weeks. She says the smell seemed to culminate about two days ago when the whole city smelled like a sewer.

"You can smell sulfur in the air and it was really strong from the creeks around my neighborhood, I've never smelled it that strong before," Bingham said.

Bingham said the sulfur scented water is the first sign of a large earthquake, and it occurs several weeks before the event.

A seismologist said it is possible to predict an earthquake is coming based on the sulfur smell. There is research around the world that's looking at that study extensively. There are other signs like ringing in the ears, feelings of nausea or pets standing still when they're anticipating an earthquake.

WoW!!!

Trip out. I'm in the Los Angeles Metro Area. Near Dodger Stadium. This a.m. when taking the kids to school we could smell it. It was strong. Very sulfur-ish. At first, I thought that one of my kids had blown off a fart. But that wasn't the case. Okay, this is weird.
