I thought this was cool . They invented a way to touch things that arent really present .

he folks at MIT unveiled a new invention that allows you to reach through a screen and interact with real objects.

It sounds unbelievable, but it isn't. The invention turns 3-dimensional data from the user into physical representations in real time, and all from a remote location. (Via Vimeo / Tangible Media Group)

The device, which was created by MIT researchers and students, is called inFORM.

CNET explains inFORM's " ... grid is powered by an elaborate system of computer-controlled linkages and actuators under the table. Meanwhile, an overhead Kinect and projector deliver data on user motion into the system while casting visual feedback onto the table."

Boston Magazine explains this process allows ...

" ... someone on the other end of a video conference call to have a 'strong sense of presence and the ability to interact physically at a distance,' almost as if they were physically there." (Via Boston Magazine)

Valuewalk says the invention could change the way people work, and could eventually mean that everyone would be able to work from home.

I wonder why they haven't been able to come up with a good VR simulator for the online gaming industry. One would think that it would be a hot seller if you could have a VR experience from home.

Imagine a virtual bar that interacts with people? That would be cool.

This is going to be the greatest porn ever. I can't wait. Although just because technology is available, cheap and replenishable doesn't mean it will see mainstream use. There's electronics inventions sitting at FBI headquarters because they are protected state secrets now, stolen from Tesla, et al.

And where are they now?

And what would they say to us?

The holodeck is depicted as an enclosed room in which objects and people are simulated by a combination of transported matter, replicated matter, tractor beams, and shaped force fields onto which holographic images are projected.

the holodeck is controlled by voice commands, though physical controls have been shown in a few episodes. They also include safety protocols to protect the users.

Some users may develop an addiction to the holodeck (a condition known as "holodiction"), leading to them spending unhealthy amounts of time there and personifying artificial characters

The holographic imaging system creates realistic environments and landscapes. The conversion system of matter creates physical objects from the central supply of raw materials from the ship. Under normal conditions, a participant in a holographic simulation should not be able to distinguish a real object from a simulated one.

The holodeck also generates impressive recreations of humanoid and other forms of life by means of precisely-shaped force fields covered by holographic imagery, with the effect that they seem solid to the touch. They are made to move by use of tractor beams, resulting in highly articulated and computer-controlled "puppets" which are exceptionally realistic, showing nearly equal behavior to that exhibited by living beings, depending, of course, on the limits of the software involved. However, the replication-based material transport system is obviously unable to reproduce a living being.

Solid, inanimate objects on the holodeck—items such as a book, a rock, or an apple—are composed of matter arranged by the replication system and, when deemed appropriate by the computer system, can be interacted with or even consumed. Objects created by replication of matter are physically real and can indeed be removed from the holodeck, noting only that they will no longer be under the control of the computer once removed from the simulation. However, objects created on the holodeck that are purely images can not be removed from the simulated environment, even if they seem to have a physical reality due to the force fields. In order for a given item to be removed from the environment of the holodeck, a person would need to be holding the object as he/she leaves.

Is Microsoft making a gaming holodeck for your home?

According to a patent filed by Microsoft, it looks like the video games of the future could take over our entire living rooms — holodeck style.

Microsoft has filed a patent with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for "an interactive computing system configured to provide an immersive display experience." That immersive display experience means that the games you play would be projected on all four walls of your living room.

How would this work? For a sneak peek, see the images above and below, which Microsoft submitted to the patent office.

Totally WOW!

I had a dream about this a few nights ago, and I thought it was too weird to even tell my dream group about.

A bunch of people were standing around a table, reaching into a transparent box. Then I tried it, and I was touching stuff inside the box. Then someone said .. "it's not even real!"

It's just a yahoo group where people write in and post their dreams and others comment.

This really flips me out, now I wonder if I somehow astral traveled to be able to see this invention. I'm a person who's somewhat skeptical about such things.
