Because doing it 1 week earlier might be interpreted as an internet prank and gives corporations 8 days to get their calendars working again for the next fiscal year?

anyway that is good riddance to bad rubbish.

RIP XP you served well and beyond the call of duty.

yup i remember the BSoD, was such a pain but it only happened once or twice.

I still like xp in terms of performance. i have a 6 year old desktop pc with 1.5GB ram and a P4 processor and it can run 720p HD movies without any problems.

Now I could load W7/8 on it and it would not run that smoothly.

I will always consider XP to be the best, but that's because I used it for so long. On older computers I still load XP and it's fast. Only around 20-30 processes running compared to the 60-80 in W7 that I usually see. And that's even after closing out of a lot of useless shit.

Sad to see XP go but it is what it is.

I also have it installed on two old PC's...

It had its quirks but I liked it. Windows eight is the biggest piece of shit yet devised by humans.

I'm no expert, but this may contain useful information:
Quote:Securing XP PCs after Microsoft drops support
By Susan Bradley on December 19, 2013

All good things must come to an end; in less than four months, Microsoft will officially end support for Windows XP.

Here are the steps I’ll take to ensure that my remaining XP machines are as secure as they can be.

What does “end of support” mean? After April 8, 2014, Microsoft will — among other things — no longer release security updates for its 12-year-old operating system. Third-party hardware and software vendors might also take a cue from Redmond and drop development of XP-compatible drivers, add-ons, and utilities on their new products.

If you're still using XP after the support ends and you don't plan to upgrade, the best defense would be to air-gap your PC. Take out the ethernet cable and/or remove the wi-fi card/dongle.

I installed XP on an old netbook, removed the screen and hooked it up to my TV to use as a nettop to play old games, watch films and shows. I took the wi-fi module out too, so no infections for that machine.

Yes, big exoskeletal hostile aliens were attacking the Polity, and the f**kers ate people.

If I want to reinstall XP on a new PC, will I still be able to download the service pack 2 or 3?

If society fell apart, we - the people would build a new one. Most people are good at their core, and when we see things that are wrong we work to fix them together. Make friends with your neighbors, get involved with your community - because we will rebuild our lives, our communities, from horrible circumstances we always will.

Maybe so. But there is nothing like experiencing the "joys" of a Linux upgrade to make you long for any Microsoft OS.

I've read some good things about 'Mint' - downloaded an ISO
but haven't played with it yet ...

i like linux just not the interface. i have ubuntu and run a webserver/website from my wan ip, nothing fancy more like something just for myself (but you can see it from theoutside world) and i do most of the upgrades all in linux. its fun to play on but i just think the interface is too small for the screen.
