Obama mentioned during the debate that there where different needs to be met with defense spending... can anyone help me find the part where he mentions space as part of the defense spending.

I just found that a little odd. I will probably have more time to look for the part of the 3rd debate later. But numbers make for a quicker find.

I listened the debate carefully and didn't notice him mentioning the "defense of space" or anything similar. I'd say you're making shit up.

But for the reply below you, I am interested in what he meant and how much budget he is talking about... whether it could be a revert back to the Reagan Star Wars Program. As we all know Obama is big on 'times have changed'.

Here is one scenario.

Some nation launches a nuke and detonates it at high altitude.

Some GPS and comsats in line of sight to detonation possibly taken out immediately. Bye to satellite TV.

Within two weeks all low earth orbiting satellites fall out of the sky because of the radiation (this include Iridium and spy sats).

This is what happened in the 1962 Starfish Prime high altitude detonation in the Pacific. It fried the orbiting satellites.

Options:

1. Harden commercial satellites (most military already hardened).
2. Have replacements ready to launch.
3. Some form of space based missile defense (generally considered too expensive)
4. Like 3 but on a ship that could be moved to near threat location.
5. Treaty inspections of any payload to be launched.
6. Drones with nuclear detectors that would clandestinely check payloads.

How do I know so much about it?

I did a paper for my Space Warfare class on the subject ten years ago. We also wargamed an attack on Mars between rival mining countries. My team lost. My instructor was big on wargaming.
