It means that I don't even know if this source is legit. I have heard some people bash NETC. If it is real, things have been calm the past few days and today you see a 5 which is pretty rare. Two 4's also. Now that they are pulling the rods, this map might be good to watch.

The problem is that the "alerts" are just upward changes in the radiation levels.

I've seen one of the coastal stations be red/black at 30 and green at 170.

Billings Montana is 610 CPM and green all the time - which should mean over 40 mS/year of background radiation. All these alerts are for amounts less than the Billings average.

However the map does amuse people.

600 CPM is approximately 43 mS/year the last time I did the conversion. The Health Physics society says 50 mS/year is safe (no excess deaths). Billings has one of the lowest cancer rates (they are in the lowest third) and at almost the HPS recommended limit of radioactivity.

You really need to look at the map a bit to get a feel for how radioactivity changes.

The concentration of naturally- produced tritium in atmospheric moisture is generally in the range 0.2 to 1.0 Bq/L...

Away from nuclear facilities in Canada, concentrations of tritium in air and in water are
typically 0.1 becquerel per cubic metre (Bq/m3)and 5 becquerels per litre (Bq/L)
respectively.

Since it is made in the upper atmosphere and is bound in water vapor the concentration can vary wildly with wind/humidity conditions.

I'm calling bullshit.

My geiger counter hasn't been calibrated, and I don't have a calibration sample, but it sounded for some of the old trees in my yard, not getting anything to worry about today.

Ok Kool so they seem to want 19.95 to give you the INFO!
But you can click on each symbol and get the pop up which does give up average, elevated and % So if you cut and past this info to "GOOGLE" It takes you to "WIKI" where you spend some time reading to bring urself current on RAD levels and what they mean and you discover YOUR all Going to Live!
