Shooting Outside Lackland Air Force Base

This is from a memo being sent around at a workplace on Lackland AFB.....

Quote:This is the news we got today about an unidentified cop car trying to pull people over. So be careful in the area around Lackland. Crazy people!

Team Texas,

We have received a report this morning that a vehicle operating in the Medina Annex area just off base may be involved in criminal activity. The vehicle has been described as a white Crown Victoria (former police car) with the word POLICE grayed out on the side. Note: please be aware that this is not uncommon to see similar vehicles on our San Antonio streets, since public vehicle auctions do occur regularly. The difference here came from the actions of the occupants.

During an incident that reportedly occurred early yesterday morning, the vehicle was occupied by four Hispanic males with firearms, including an automatic weapon. The occupants flashed the headlights/flood lights at the vehicle of one of our NCTX service members after he left the base heading north on Ellison Drive in an attempt to get the driver to pull over. When the service member did not see the normal blue/red police lights and therefore did not stop, the occupants of the assailants' vehicle reportedly opened fire numerous times. Fortunately the service member escaped injury. At this point, this appears to be a random criminal act.

A similar vehicle has been seen in the area over the past two days just off 410 and around the HEB at Valley High. We are working closely with Lackland AFB, SAPD and the FBI on the case to get further details.

Please maintain good situational awareness, especially during normal non-duty hours, and use extreme caution should you be faced with a similar situation, regardless the vehicle type. Drive to the nearest police station or back to the military base, and also notify your chain of command as soon as possible.

I thought everyone in texas carried openly. Anyway...lots of people run around with these former cop cars where I live. They're emulating police though locally the service vehicles (now) look much different so it's no big deal.

Unfortunately, most military bases are surrounded by bad areas for some reason (cheap land likely) especially those in metropolitan areas. This is a typical situation and the people driving that car have no clue how easy it is for law enforcement to track down a car with a past service exemption record.

I agree. However I was thinking a bit more along the lines of the narco-traffickers getting a bit bolder at attacking those who are eavesdropping and monitoring them.

"This is the news we got today about an unidentified cop car trying to pull people over. So be careful in the area around Lackland. Crazy people!"

BTW Lackland Air Force Base is no longer an open installation. It is used for Basic Training purposes only.

What's your take on why these incidents (actual or potential violence against military on home soil) are occurring now when prior to 20 months ago I cannot remember any?
