Short on Food, Cash?
Here is a program I would like to start:
FAST (Food and Sustainability Training)
I would teach others how to supply their own Healthy food on a limited income. (Including cooking from scratch)
How to cut expenses so they might be able to afford to cover their shelter and clothing costs monthly without worrying where the next meal was coming from.
How to forage and provide more food for their family without monetary expenditures.
How to 'stock up' extra food just in case their financial situation sees a further downturn.
There is more but I will keep the list short.
I will be out half the day, but I keep seeing posts about food and cash issues. There are people who can help and not necessarily telling you where to get handouts. Some can help with knowledge at least. If you are in a tough spot and would like help or maybe even a few answers, post it here. OR if you think it is too personal, send me a pm. I WILL get back to you the best I can.
If I told you everything,
You wouldn't believe me anyway.

Excellent. You might as well practice here - we LOPer's are always for learning more about obtaining food for less money.

RE: Short on Food, Cash?
Let's start with a little game.
If you have very little food.............
List what is in your cupboard and fridge.
How many meals do you see? Then we can expand from there.
If I told you everything,
You wouldn't believe me anyway.

No. That is why you cook from scratch. You'll see if the thread takes off.

RE: Short on Food, Cash?
Good thread idea.
When I was first married my wife and lived off a very limited income $280 per week and we owned a small car.
We cooked everything from scratch to save money. We made our own lollies for our daughter.
I was brought up like that though, my mother was a professional house wife until I was 12 and she went back to work. She vacuumed twice a day. Brought biscuits and food were always regarded as second rate a last resort. In those days in my town the house wives and mothers used to visit each other for a coffee or tea in the mornings so it was no problem to bake while they waited and relaxed.
Cooking seems to be a forgotten art these days. I am the cook [the house-b*tch or kitchen-b*tch I have been called] at my house, I still save a lot of money by cooking from scratch.

I'll play.
Pantry:
- Mostly tinned tomatos, I can make more than 5 different dishes with that.
- Rice
- Dried pasta and noodles.
- Brown Sugar
- Iodised salt
- Basic dried spices, must always have black pepper in the house or I'm nuts.
- Tinned fish (Mostly sardines since it has most protein per 100gm, tuna, pink salmon)
- Tea bags (In bulk, My favourites and a pleasant addiction of mine)
- Cocoa powder - because I'm a lady
- Mixed fruit and nut/dried muesli - keeps well, energy source and magnesium is good for depression at desperate times
- Wheat Bix - a cereal I can make a million different things with!
Fridge:
- Dozen eggs. (Hopefully I'll get hens one day when I move somewhere where I can)
- Frozen Mixed Vegetables by the bagful - throw in with Tomato Soup, Pasta, Pan fried rices, Pan fried fish, all simple stuff.
- Non-reconstituted 100% fresh fruit juice. You know the kind you get in cartons that stays in the fridge part? It's cheaper than buying a bag of fresh fruit. I water it down so I can get more fluid out of it to ease hunger.
- Minced Meat or Sausage - cheap meat.
- Containers of frozen meals from leftovers
- When in season, pumpkin and watermelon! Big and cheap.
- Yoghurt, I like it plain. Plain with active cultures means I can go make more yoghurt anyway!
I dont really drink milk except for in tea so I can do without it fine.
Good bread is expensive - I never eat plain white bread because of how unhealthy and unfilling it is.
I'd get flour when possible but I like to get things that are quick for time, though I do love to bake. If I included my baking essentials my list would be longer including the nuts, seeds, etc I would keep.
My advice is your best pantry fillers are ones that can last long and can make *at least* 4 different flavours with - hence also the need for spices. It will drive you nuts eating the same meal days in a row, and your mental health is also of concern, not just your body, when you are going through hard times.

When a leaf falls, who's fault is it?
The tree that let it go,
The wind for blowing it away,
Or the leaf that got tired of holding on?

Drug abusers and
