Doctors are supposed to apprehend the guns from the patients home, themselves?

No, doctors are supposed to avoid hurting their patient sans politicization.

So if a Doctor believes a patient is at risk of harming themselves or others with weapons at home.

what do they do?

How about nothing? Since when does a white lab coat constitute parental authority?

The same thing psychologists and psychiatrists do today when faced with this dilemma- follow their conscience.

No, it's just "out of line" to then report the answer to the State.

Doctors are supposed to apprehend the guns from the patients home, themselves?

Are they going to confiscate all the rope in the house as well, tylenols, other drugs, chemicals, take out the bath tub, rip off the second floor?

you may want to study up on the statistics for suicide. Guns are many times more likely to be used if access is available.

But to your point, if suicide is very likely, they can have the patient institutionalized.

Obama's 2013 Executive orders # 16 & #17

16. Clarify that the Affordable Care Act does not prohibit doctors asking their patients about guns in their homes.

17. Release a letter to health care providers clarifying that no federal law prohibits them from reporting threats of violence to law enforcement authorities.

Obama wants Doctors to understand that if a person comes to them and says they want to harm themselves or others, that they are no longer under the guild of Dr/patient confidentiality.

Of course I understand that, a guy comes in and says, "I feel like going on a shooting spree and killing as many people as I can." Doctor says, "Do you own any guns?" If the guys says, "Yes.", then the Doctor says, "Well I have to report you to the local police."

What happens then is questionable... Do they take away this guy's guns? Do they lock him up for terroristic threats?

What if the guy says "No". Is the doctor still going to call the police?

But wait........They are asking you if you own a gun, before you even see the doctor and explain to him why you are there.

Why? You aren't threatening anyone.

Well now they already have it on record and if one day you come in and say, "Damn doc, I've been feeling a little depressed lately....." Doc says, "Well it says here you own a gun".

If you state, "No" on your record that you don't have a gun, and the more thorough data base reveals in fact you do own a gun, what then? Will you be charged with lying on your health records? Will that be a crime in itself?

There is nothing wrong with this. The VA has been ndoing it to veterans for years. You are under no obligation to answer. That is my standard answer. The reason is this and it makes sense. They ask you and you say yes. It is then in your file. A year or two later you get depressed, and that you may have thoughts of suicide...or shooting your estranged wife. You are a threat with the means to carry those threats out....this has NEVER been covered by confidentiality. Shrinks are required and have been required to report threats of violence. The police will come to your house and take your guns. End of story. I own lots of guns and believe in gun rights. A part of being a responsible gun owner is admitting some people shouldnt have them, and doing what it takes to remove their ability to hurt someone and get the help they need.

PS. the cops CAN (doesnt mean they will) come to your house to remove your guns after any felony arrest, including DUI. They can come to your house to revoke your pistol permit for a felony. As it should be.

Since someone who is stupid enough to tell the doctor they plan to hurt themself or others and tell that doctor they have the means to do so.....they have shown they need some help.

I agree with you, it just concerns me how far they will let it go. If a person says they feel suicidal--fine take away their gun, but as soon as the cops leave nothing is going to prevent them from hanging themselves or slitting their wrists. At what point will you lose your gun, could it be the point when the dr has to prescribe you an anti-depressant?

You mean after you are found guilty since in the US you are pressumed innocent till proven guilty or can afford an attorney to prove your innocent.

Wait, this may not be such a bad thing afterall. Doctors push those drugs like candy, if you realize you'll lose your gun over them, people may stop using them.

I know a Dr. tried to but Mr. Sunny on them after he hurt his back. Mr. Sunny refused them.
