horn Why drug testing of welfare recipients is a bad idea

On July 1st, Florida will become the first state to begin mandatory drug-testing of welfare recipients. While at first glance this may seem to be a great idea, really it is an appeal to emotional rhetoric and typical knee-jerk reaction by the public which sells this bill. Under closer scrutiny, the public would see that this is a terrible idea, more bureaucracy, more government control, with no net gain for the public at large or the taxpayer. So let us look at the reasons, point by point, why drug testing of welfare recipients is actually a very bad idea.

Would you deny a homeless veteran the right to eat for the next year because he smoked a joint?

Sorry, if you apply for gov't assistance supposedly paid for by the people, then you shouldn't have disposable income for drugs. I'm all for conservation of privacy and all, but those on the gov't dole should be under the highest scrutiny. If they can afford drugs, then apparently they don't need taxpayer money.

Oh well, it will be very short term...then it will slow down. Tax Payers should not ahve to pay protection money to Criminals to stay safe. Crime away day and night if you want Animals, the Police State will handle them properly.

It depends. Some people think welfare is a bad idea. Some people think drugs are bad. You just got to put those two points of view together I guess.

You are assuming they are using welfare money for drugs. That is not often the case at all. Most often, drug users support their own habit by selling drugs. That still doesn't mean they should be allowed to starve in the streets.

So your solution to poverty is a bigger police-state? You are aware that we already have 25% of the world's TOTAL prison population?

Also, the Bankers, Politicians, and CEOs. Anyone who received government bailouts and/or public servants, then I am all for drug testing.

No, probably starting from the fact that he's already homeless. But I wouldn't pay for his joint either.

I know, but by all means let their profit made off the drugs count toward their income and be deducted from their state check. I'm no goody goody, but I draw the line at supporting pushers who make a profit off of it so that all the money they make off the drugs are disposable income. More power to the guy not drawing a check and making his living off of selling pot though.
