Get a Silverrado or anything else with a 305 or 350. Those engines go and go and go, even if you don't take care of them.

Another nice thing is the replacement parts are about as cheap as they get.

I agree with the 305 / 350 easy to work on. I had '74 Chevy still runs I gave it to a buddy lives in the mountains.

I had an old Chevy LUV years ago. I think it's still running. A bit small, but that little f**ker never failed me once, and it had over 300K on it back then.

Toyotas are freaking expensive to repair, and don't really last much longer than anything else. Just like other commodities, all makes/models/brands have lemons, and some ones.
The best bet is to know how to inspect the vehicle yourself.

under 4 grand  Wrote: (01-04-2011 09:24 AM)
looking to get a used older 4x4 truck, anyone know anything about vehicles know what is the best one to get? easy to fix, reliable, lasts forever ? has to be under 4 grand, i heard silverados were good.

please dont comment if you know nothing about vehicles. cheers.

1976 to 1979 Ford F150 . I owned a 1977, was an idiot and sold it. 1977 to 1979 came with a 400ci block that is proven indestructible. Don't get an automatic-get the 4 speed. Tranny has a granny gear- I once pulled a semi out of the mud with it-that had my mobile home attached to it lmao-they were delivering it and it got stuck trying to push it up the hill. I pulled him out , he bailed, and I spent the next 6 weekends snaking that MH through the trees onto the pad I built with a 12 ton come along and a steel cable.

I gots witnesses. chuckle

Front pumpkin' is an NP205-also indestructible.

If you can find an F250 that would be the ultimate ticket however very difficult to find and people want big money for them.

If you get one lemme know-I completely rebuilt mine at the time, engine, etc....I know all about them....

You can't go wrong with a toyota. Taken care of they last forever

On my third one- they are tough but would not be my first choice in a SHTF commando vehicle.

I agree Ford makes damn good trucks, but gas prices won't stay low forever and full size trucks of any make are mighty thirsty

True enough, however a Toy, and one of my vehicles is a Tacoma, run tough, however little bed capacity and the sheetmetal, like all modern vehicles, are shit thin.

Those old trucks, and a chevy K5 Blazer is a good one too, are excellent SHTF vehicles. Hell I had an armored 60 gallon second gas tank in the bed, ie my Ford, reinforced the cab with 1/4 inch steel plate with layers of kevlar, ( also armored the front side fenders to help protect the engine) and make a swivel tripod on the front dash to cradle my ar15 so if TSHTF I could kick out the front windshield, wear goggles, and shoot while I drive.

No shit.

Rofl

Plus you can pull just about anything with it.

I should have never have sold it.

TissueTissue

ETA: however its one street up I sold it to a young guy who is in the Marines and in Iraq. When he gets out I may just make him an offer he can't refuse. In the meantime I know his momma if TSHTF I'll just go get it.

the only problem with an used toyoto pick up truck, is FINDING ONE! people dont get rid of these very often. the ones i do see for sale dont look tht great. it's almost impossible to find good used toyoto pickup truck 85-95 in my price range.

might have better luck with the ford rangers lots more of them for sale.

Rangers can be a little dicey. An F150 that's still running well could be good.

Oops. Fired too fast. See Omega already covered the F150 topic.

If you have cash and are near a major city you can find a good used toyota truck in good condition-they don't come up often ( I owned a 1986 with the 22r engine- prolly the most reliable 4 banger ever made) trick is you gotta be on the ball, move fast, and with cash in hand. Move fast means check craigslist every day throughout the day and as soon as the ad is posted get busy....
