why so many on Internet forums choose macabre, demonic, bloody, and/or death avatars?
I am not denouncing anybody for doing this, I'm just mystified by it and trying to understand it.
It seems when people choose avatars they often choose images you might find in horror movies, or Stephen King novels. Why is that?
It seems very pronounced on conspiracy forums especially. Stylized demons, vampires, skeletons, people with guns, sinister looking creatures with glowing eyes, dolls with their heads cut off, etc. etc. etc.
I just don't understand why so many people want to represent themselves in this manner?
Any input?

Perhaps because it gives a basically harmless person a feeling of power.
I, on the other hand, really am a serial torturer/killer; I adopt the avatar of a harmless, rather didactic older man to convince people that I am harmless -- until they actually meet me for the first and last time.
