This Thing of Ours (2003)

Grandnephew of the famous mobster known as Tony Pro, Danny Provenzano is the co-writer, director, and star of the independent crime drama This Thing of Ours (the title is a literal translation of the crime organization La Cosa Nostra). Provenzano plays young mobster Nick Santini, who wishes to impress his Uncle Danny (Frank Vincent) and the other elders of a New Jersey mob. Nick plans a major bank heist with his old pal Robert Biaggio (Christian Maelen) and computer geek Austin Palermo (Louis Vanaria). Using a complicated Internet scam to distort a communications satellite, they plan to steal more than 50 million dollars.

Nick is eventually stuck with having to choose between his friends and the mob when high-ranking Patsy DeGrazio (Michael DelGaizo) kidnaps Austin. This Thing of Ours also stars Vincent Pastore (The Sopranos), James Caan (The Godfather), and Pat Cooper (Analyze This). Incidentally, Provenzano was arresting in 1999 under a 44-count felony indictment that included charges of racketeering, kidnapping, and money laundering. He eventually pleaded guilty to racketeering and was scheduled to begin a ten-year prison sentence in August 2003, just weeks after his film is released.

Maigret in Montmartre (TV Movie 2017)

Maigret in Montmartre (ITV) was Rowan Atkinson’s fourth outing as the Gallic sleuth, and if it wasn’t one of the best programmes of the Christmas period it was at least one of the best scheduled.

This 90-minute period potboiler was, in some ways, the perfect companion on a woozy Christmas Eve when the presents are under the tree and a mystery that’s all wrapped up neatly by the end is just the thing to send you off to bed feeling narratively nourished. Maigret was presented with two murders (in Montmartre); one victim was a showgirl, the other a morphine-addled countess. His task was to find what linked them together and ultimately whodunit.

The outcome wasn’t predictable but the process was. After the clues presented themselves, Maigret mused, smoked, had an epiphany and eventually got his man. Although you could say writer Guy Andrews is somewhat hamstrung by having Simenon’s hugely popular but formulaic novels as his source material, this is still a very conventional detective series. Jeopardy comes in the form of shady men in trilbys and trenchcoats, filmed from behind, and is signified by swelling strings. The action follows Maigret and no one else.

Riot (1969) Gene Hackman

A desperate group of convicts stage a minor riot to divert attention in an escape attempt. Red (Gene Hackman) and two others perpetrate the uprising, but word has leaked out and the riot is quickly changed into a symbolic protest against prison conditions and alleged cruelty by sadistic guards. Cully (Jim Brown) is the convict who is caught up in the riot of which he had no prior knowledge. As the prisoners take over the institution, a drunken party is hosted by two homosexuals in drag. The prisoners set up a mock court in which prison informers and guards are tried, convicted and brutally punished. Knives slash, fists fly and blood is spilled leading to the return of the vacationing warden. Red becomes the media spokesman for the group as the siege continues and the prisoners administer their own macabre brand of justice to those found guilty.

Wild in the Street (1968).

What if Jim Morrison had decided to led a fight to lower the voting age to 15, had himself elected president, and oversaw the forced retirement and LSD drugging of everyone over 35? The answer, according to Wild in the Street, is kind of a boring mess.

Max Frost is basically Jim Morrison, a extremely popular rock star in the late 60s. The product of an abusive father and narcissistic mother, Max is cunning psychopath and LSD pioneer. He assembles a rock group and youth revolutionary crew, including an 13 year asian girl, a 15 year old super geniuses and MIT grad, a black revolutionary and culinary author on base guitar, and some other white guy that was so boring I forgot his deal.

They get involved with basically Bobby Kennedy. Max outmaneuvers the old squares at every turn. He shuts down LA, provokes riots, and has such influence over the young, that he is able to get the constitution amended several times in span of a few years.

The movie ends with Max as essentially a Hitler for the young, his revolutionary anthem and youth revolution spreading world wide. However, he has to face the realization that he too will age, and in the eyes of the younger children, he might as well be 100.

A movie much more fun to describe than to watch, Wild in the Street does have its moments: Congress high on acid, Richard Nixon sits at home and watches Max Frost (basically Jim Morrison) become the GOP nominee for 68, old people are sent to LSD concentration camps and most seem to have a blast, and the movie ends with an eight year old vowing to destroy everyone over 10.

Despite the fun ideas and off the wall but (for 1968) relevant plot, the movie is ultra cheap, features a lot of stock footage, some scenes are edited out of order, and is badly acted. Worst of all, the viewer is subjected to awful sub-monkeys level rock songs.
