Stock pile maps!
Got it!

I've lost literally hundreds of old detailed maps in cars that got towed when somebody crashed my vehicles. Those tow shops clean out EVERYTHING before you can even find out where the car was towed.

Now, I don't keep them in the car anymore; but, that's where I NEED them. Double-edged sword can be solved by grabbing TWO copies of every freebie you find.

That HAS been happening for many decades now! There USED to be FREE and detailed local town maps at every gas station, library, city halls, tourist centers, realtor office and more.

The biggest part of the decline started in the 90's. Now, you MIGHT get lucky to find one in a yellow pages but getting one of those you have to be a local resident anyway and there's no phone booths now so ... even those ones don't reach the people who need them - like out of town visitors.

try the chamber of commerce in the towns you visit they should have a local map if not a state map to help you locate touist places.

That's why I keep my old machines, to run my old software. I have shapefiles that can be used to produce any kind of map you can buy commercially now, at any scale.

Maybe I can go into business for myself.

It's already happening. It's hard to find updated paper gazetteer type maps for some states right now.

There is a run on the existing ones and I believe not many will be made in the future.

Just a thought.... if you need a detailed PAPER map, you might want to act now.

Gazetteers are the super up-close detailed maps that are becoming hard to get in printed form. For instance it's hard to find Georgia gazetteer by DeLorme - Rand Mcnally had it but now it's sold out.

So where's the paper map showing where the Chamber of Commerce is? LOL

If there is no demand, the hard copy gazetteer maps will NOT be made anymore.

Even now some states have not been updated for gazetteer atlases (the detailed maps) since 2007-ish. That is a long time to not update and there likely are no plans to make new runs with updates if they can't get 100 pre-orders, etc.

You will see the gazetteers vanish never to be seen again except for very old ones in estate sales.

In the future, you can still get printed maps on demand but it will then cost $500 per gazetteer because they will have to "special make order" where you can get one now for $20.

To clarify - state maps and road atlases will be easy to find for awhile. What this is referring to is the DETAILED UP-CLOSE maps called GAZETTEER ATLASES of the STATES - these are disappearing.

Truckers still saying "we want the latest paper road atlas every year".

But this does not mention the gazetteers, - these will be the first to disappear imo.

You can print them off from google maps and make your own is probably why they are disappearing. I have a micro SD card with detailed maps. Can probably fit a lot inside a USB stick or external hard drive.

I only use GPS Garmin stuff as a last resort back up.

This tech is making people stupid and unaware of geography, they just follow the voice on the Garmin/GPS machine.

Study the paper map before you leave, know your routes, understand your surroundings - this creates knowledge of the area and a broad perspective of the region.

Same goes for history books. Unfortunate for the Demo-Liberal-Communist party that some history still contains truth.

A well-organized state gazetteer is priceless imo though. It has the large scale map of every section of a state.

Your idea is still a good one. Store printable maps on a flash drive. This is a good back up for the paper map.

Not a lot of people will do this though. They will rely on the "cloud" always guiding them.
