A Belgian designer has come up with an origami cardboard shelter to hand out to homeless people during the winter. The idea is to prevent deaths on the streets due to the cold and to provide rough sleepers with some privacy. Jack Parrock reports.

Considering belgium's legacy, that's kinda sad. "We stole shitloads of gold and diamonds and sh*t, but hey, have some cardboard"

That's not suggesting it's a bad idea (since it's efficient and I know a LOT of people could use something like that at times, especially living in south africa) but that would last about 10 minutes in weather, without at least some (probably) reflective cover, mylar, some plastics, maybe foil, too.

It'd probably be better to look at like, bamboo, hemp and similar "plastics" and materials for sh*t like that. For SOME kind of robustness.

You'd freeze to death if you tried to live in a cardboard tent in Australia's winter. How is someone supposed to survive a European winter in one? Apart from the sheer cold, water destroys cardboard, or are they giving out gigantic cardboard umbrellas, too?

Am guessing it would need to be water repellent else as you say, pretty useless..

I think winter here in Southern England is similar to that in Belgium and does not often go below zero so maybe that is part of the thinking..

That's why I suggested the plastic, bamboo, hemp, etc. I live in south africa, it'd be 34-35 degrees celsius and with utterly incorrect predictions and random weather and have like gale force swirling winds and hail 10 minutes later. Followed by torrential rain. Winter is generally okay here though. (Dry, temperate, very rarely below 0).

Very good idea- the bottom of the tent is plastic coated to insulate from the wet ground.

The video showed the cardboard tents being used in a covered tunnel with protection from the elements.

Those tents should be sold commercially to hikers - cardboard is light. It needs plastic coating on the top to protect from light rain/mist.
These have to be used in a somewhat sheltered place like an open garage, a hallway or something like that

who is going to make money producing these special cardboard boxes? Ttpcmasm
why not simply give them all the used Amazon boxes and duct tape, so they can style their own?

Do you think money is more beneficial, or distracting to advancement?

That's some interesting rhetoric.

It's degenerate, entropic. Obviously destructive, exploitative. It devalues actual worth. Only less money can improve this world. Humans are the only beings stupid enough to "need" it. And why? For greed, for ignorance.
