I used to know some Maidu Indians, not that far from the Modoc plateau. I read about the history of Captain Jack and the Modoc wars. The basalt modoc plateau has hundreds of caves, lava tubes that run for a long ways. The Indians knew them well, but the military didn't. So the Indians won that war sort of.
